  5. Past Continuous Tense
  6. Future Continuous Tense

What is Past?

First we should know the meaning of past - "The time before the present is called past " For Ex: someone asks me "Mr Naveed what time is it" so i say - its 2:30pm so this is present because this is the current time and if i say 2:29pm so this is past because this was the time before the present
Still confuse don't worry take one more example - Lets say today is my birthday and people are coming to my home and one of them asked me "Mr.Naveed how old are you now?"

so i say 20 years - so this present because right iam 20 years old but i was 19 years old before this time in english grammar we called it past ok!!!

What is Past Tense?

So i hope now you have understood what is the meaning of past so let's understand what is past tense for which you are here. It is one the of 12 tenses and it the Usage / Definition is
  • "An Action Which Happened In The Past"

Defintion | Usage:

Usage / Definition - Explanation: "An Action Which Happened In The Past" - For Example: "She ate an ice-cream" - let's say she went with her friends for a shopping and after coming form the shopping they decided to take ice-cream so she and her firends ate ice-cream

and now they are at home - so in this story we are showing that the action of eating ice-cream is not happening right now this action happened in the past so whenever we need to show any action which happened in past we use past tense

Past Tense : Formula

Till now we have understood the usage or the defintion. now we should understand how to make example sentences to do that we need to see the structure of making examples which is

Subject:

Definition : Who or What Performs The Action. It Can Be (He , She , it , They , You , We) or Anyname - For Example: - He, Naveed, Computer, English

Verb:

Definition: "A Word Which Shows An Action Is Called Verb" - Ex: (Dance , Read , Listen , do)Kinds of Verbs: We have four kinds in verbs
  • Verb (1) First - form
  • Verb (2) Second - form
  • Verb (3) Third - form
  • Verb (4) Fourth - form
We are learning about verbs form because in past tense we have to use verb 2 form . keep that in your mind every tense has its own verb form let say if you are using present continuous tense then you will have to use verb 4 form please don't be confuse you just need to know which tense use which verb form then just use it
  • Verb (1st Form ) - Eat
  • Verb (2nd Form) - Ate
  • Verb (3rd Form) - Eaten
  • Verb (4th Form) - Eating
For Ex: Simple Sentence - I eat dinner but because according to the strucutre we have to use - Verb (2nd Form) - then the new sentence will be - "I ate dinner"

Object:

In easy words object gives us the full meaning of a sentence
Example: He played - in this sentence we don't know what did he play? either football , cricket - this sentence is without object - now another Example with object -
Example No 2 : "He Played football" - this sentence Is with object Means (He is a Subject , Played is a ->Verb , Football is an ->Object) and because we have the object (which is Football) giving us the full meaning and sense - now we know he played football not cricket or anyother game

We have five (5) types of sentences
  1. Simple / Affirmative

1) Affirmative Sentences

Simple or Affirmative Sentences are those sentences in which we don't deny or ask question means they are totally simple - Ex: I ate eggs - this is the very simple why because - in this sentence iam not denying or asking question
Note: Because we are using past tense therefore we will use (2-form Verb) (for example - "He eat" - Will become - "He ate" )

How To Make Negative Sentence Rules | Explanation:
  1. Not - (Not Means - No)
  2. "Did" Is The Helping Verb - We have Did as the helping verb in past tense - may be you are asking yourself why do we need (Helping Verb like "Did") when we can only use the word (not) when are not agreeing well the answer is very simple - as you know in english grammar we have many structures so how will a person understand which tense are you using. in order to make this confusion clear every tense has its own helping verb so that a person can understand oh this tense you are using ok!!
  3. Verb 2nd form - Becomes - Verb 1st form : Please Keep that in your mind that verb 2nd form become verb 1st form in negative
For Ex: I ate eggs - but in negative it will be - I did not eat eggs

Formula of Negative:

Sub + Did + Not + V1 + Object
Subject = Means Who or what perform the action
Verb = A word which is used to indicate the act is called verb
